Her Justice Summer Internship Application Period: November 24 to January 31

Her Justice invites rising 2L and 3L law students to apply for our Summer Internship Program. Interns will receive comprehensive training and engage in meaningful casework under the mentorship and guidance of experienced Her Justice staff attorneys. We are looking for candidates with a demonstrated commitment to women’s rights, as well as experience working with underserved communities and/or survivors of intimate partner violence.

This summer, we are offering internship positions within our Family & Matrimonial and Immigration Practice Groups. Please see descriptions of our Family & Matrimonial and Immigration internships below.

The internship period will start on the Tuesday after Memorial Day for a minimum of 10 weeks, 7 hours per day. The application period for the Summer intern position will open on November 24, 2025 and applications will be accepted through January 31, 2026. Interviews will be held on a rolling basis.

Intern Qualifications:

  • Law student (rising 2L or 3L)
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills; self-starter and highly motivated
  • Demonstrated interest in social justice, immigrant rights, domestic violence issues or women’s issues
  • Ability to ask questions and work humbly, collaboratively, and independently
  • Knowledge of family, matrimonial, or immigration law, as well as fluency in another language, are helpful but not required

Compensation: Her Justice is committed to ensuring our interns are compensated for their time. Law students are highly encouraged to apply for stipends, work-study, school credit, or fellowships that may be available to them. Her Justice will provide a $5,000 stipend for the summer to interns who receive no outside compensation, and will supplement any outside funding, to ensure the intern receives a total of $5,000 for the summer.

To Apply: Interested law students can submit application materials directly to legalinternship@herjustice.org on or after November 24. The subject line should indicate “Summer Intern Application” and specify which practice group the applicant wants to work with (“Family & Matrimonial” or “Immigration“) so that the Subject line reads: “Summer Intern Application – Family & Matrimonial” or “Summer Intern Application – Immigration.”

Intern applications should consist of a:

  1. Cover letter/statement of interest, noting any language skills, relevant experiences, practice group interest, and public interest funding (if any);
  2. Resume;
  3. Writing sample;
  4. Unofficial transcript; and
  5. List of references.

Only applications submitted during the application period will be considered; only applicants considered for the internship will be contacted.

Her Justice will also be participating in the 2026 Public Interest Legal Career (PILC) Fair and interested law students at participating schools may submit their application materials (cover letter & resume) through the PILC Fair portal by the applicable registration deadline or apply directly.

About the Family & Matrimonial Internship Position

Her Justice seeks a Family & Matrimonial Practice Group Intern for Summer 2026. The position is open to law students (rising 2L or 3L) only. The full-time position requires a minimum commitment of 10 weeks, 7 hours per day. The position is hybrid, and summer interns must be able to commute to the Her Justice office in lower Manhattan on a weekly basis. The summer interns will be provided with a company-owned computer for use during their internship.

Law student interns work under the supervision of a Her Justice staff attorney to support the attorney’s in-house caseload and special projects. Responsibilities will vary depending on the intern’s interests and the program needs of Her Justice. The intern will learn trauma informed lawyering skills through casework and client interactions and will also learn the foundations of family law and matrimonial law. Responsibilities may include:

  • Conducting intake interviews with prospective clients by phone;
  • Interfacing with clients on uncontested or litigated divorce matters;
  • Drafting stipulations, pleadings, and motions;
  • Researching case law and writing legal memoranda; and
  • Attending working group meetings or court hearings.

About the Immigration Internship Position

Her Justice seeks an Immigration Practice Group Intern for Summer 2026. The position is open to law students (rising 2L & 3L) only. The full-time position requires a minimum commitment of 10 weeks, 7 hours per day. The position is hybrid and summer interns must be able to commute to the Her Justice office in lower Manhattan on a weekly basis. The summer interns will be provided with a company-owned computer.

Law student interns work under the supervision of a Her Justice staff attorney to support the attorney’s in-house caseload and special projects. Responsibilities will vary depending on the intern’s interests and the program needs of Her Justice. The intern will learn trauma informed lawyering skills through casework and client interactions and will also learn the foundations of immigration law. Responsibilities may include:

  • Drafting forms and client affidavits for VAWA, U visa, or T visa applications;
  • Drafting records or certification requests to government agencies;
  • Reviewing and analyzing supporting evidence;
  • Translating civil documents or support letters;
  • Researching case law or administrative decisions and writing legal memoranda; and
  • Conducting intake interviews with prospective clients by telephone.
