Spectrum News 1: Domestic violence groups push Hochul to sign coerced debt bill
New York shouldn’t make survivors pay for their abuse.
By signing the Coerced Debt Bill into law, Gov. Hochul can ensure that coerced debts are repaid by the RIGHT person: abusers who accrued them as way of controlling their victims— so that survivors aren’t left carrying the bill for their abuse.
As Her Justice Policy Director Rachel Braunstein told Spectrum News NY1, “it makes common sense.”
Without Gov. Hochul’s signature on the Coerced Debt Bill, survivors’ futures are hanging in the balance. New York has the opportunity to protect survivors, but that window is closing — Governor Hochul needs to act now!
