VAWA Self-Petitions and Battered Spouse Waivers:
This training will provide volunteer attorneys with the tools to file Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) Self-Petitions and Battered Spouse Waivers with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). VAWA Self-Petitions and Battered Spouse Waivers are both immigration remedies that provide a path to legal residence in the United States for survivors of domestic violence that was perpetrated by a U.S. citizen or legal resident spouse. Volunteers learn a new area of the law and make a positive difference for clients who live in fear of deportation and of being permanently separated from their children.
This training will prepare volunteer attorneys to analyze the elements of a VAWA Self-Petition and Battered Spouse Waiver, conduct client interviews, draft affidavits, gather evidence, research immigration laws and regulations, and prepare and file applications. These immigration matters are administrative filings that typically conclude with a non-adversarial interview in front of an immigration official at USCIS.
This training will be facilitated by Esther Limb, Esq.
This traditional format course provides transitional/non-transitional credit to all attorneys. The duration of this course is two and a half hours.
CLE Credit: 1 hour of Skills credit, 1.5 hours of Professional Practice.
