Summer Associate Program: U Nonimmigrant Status Training

Date & Time: 05/27/2025 from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Location: Alston & Bird

Event Type: CLE Trainings

U Nonimmigrant Status (“U visa”):

This training will provide volunteer attorneys with the tools to file a petition for U Nonimmigrant Status with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). U Nonimmigrant Status is granted to a victim of certain crimes, like domestic violence and rape, who cooperates in the investigation or prosecution of her attacker.  U Nonimmigrant Status allows a client and her family members to work and live lawfully in the U.S., and creates a pathway to the attainment of lawful permanent resident status (“green card”).  It also allows certain family members, such as children, living abroad to travel to the U.S. and reunite with the victim.

Through the training, volunteer attorneys will learn how to analyze the elements of a U Nonimmigrant case, conduct client interviews, draft affidavits, gather evidence, research immigration laws and regulations, and prepare and file applications.  This is an administrative filing and there is no court appearance or interview associated with Petitions for U Nonimmigrant Status.

This training will be facilitated by Prathiba Desai, Esq.

This live classroom program provides transitional/non-transitional credit to all attorneys. CLE Credit: 1 hours of Skills credit, 1 hours of Professional Practice
