Last week, these words came directly from the highest office in our country. They harken to a time when abusers’ violence was seen as a private matter — and, especially when partnered with recent actions by the federal government like AG Bondi’s decision to limit asylum for victims of domestic violence — they threaten to dismantle decades of hard-won legal and cultural progress we’ve made to make homes and communities safer for all of us.
